Could be improved upon...

I purchased two of these. One is in service, the other is still awaiting renovation. It works, but it's grossly over-priced for what it is. This unit costs more than a 3D printer with significantly more precision, electronics, and moving parts. The inside of this unit contains simple stepper motors with a micro-controller. It's basically a weekend science project in a fancy package with a bloated price. Nonetheless, it works. It could probably be more compact, and the API needs to be opened up so software developers can develop home automation apps around it rather than relying on cloud based services like Apple Homekit, Google, and Alexa. Not everyone wants to be on the grid. As for the data cable, it's a 4 wire cable. It can be shortened, extended, modified, etc., (I'm sure the controller warranty will be void) but there's nothing proprietary about the cable. It has a 4 conductor 3.5mm plug on the end of it, I'm sure for Power/Ground/TX/RX, so as long as you reconnect the wires properly (keep in mind that the TX and RX wires are not straight through, you have to cross them when using it with the shower controller) you can repair the cable yourself.

Great as is, but hopefully will get better

In a series of escalating steps. I went from buying a new part for my old shower door to a complete remodel of my shower. A big part of it was putting in the Moen U shower. The installation video shows standard PEX adapters on the S3102 - it's wrong, you can't use those. Use the push-on Sharkbite connectors. The Android app doesn't appear to work, I had to borrow an iPhone to get it fully set up, and I've seen other reviews where people returned it rather than jump through that hoop. But now that it's installed and set up, it's a great unit. I'd like it to connect to my smart home controller, and I imagine that should be coming. It's too obvious a feature not to have it. In the mean time I have a great controller that has the ability to upgrade as it goes along.

Great idea

I bought the valve and its controller about a month ago. The main purpose was to save water using the controller limiting the duration of shower. My son has down sindrome and loves to stay under the shower for a long time. The good news he learned very quicky to operate the shower, the bad news after the set duration he starts the shower again. It would be nice to have a programable recess time to prevent the shower from starting immediately again. Another issue is that after I managed to make the ios app (U by moen) sync with the controller, after some tiem the app got disconnected from it and even I am connected to my created account, I had no presence of the valve or controller; therefore no more control over the shower through the app. I tried several times to make the sync process all over again and the system does everything it is suppose to do, in the controller you can see the messages connecting to the network, contacting the server, but does not finish the process, rolling over to initial settings asking for language etc. In the app it goes through steps 1 and 2 very quickly and some times it reaches step 3, but does not finish the adding device process telling to try again. So even I see the product has great functionalities, its very annoying to make such and investment, and having to face this difficulties.
