I've been using Melissa and Doug puzzles for years with my kids who are now 4 and 5 yrs. These are no different, they are wooden puzzles very sturdy and not too thick. The edges are smooth hence no cutting of little hands. They also fit nicely together when assembled, if a piece doesn't fit, kids get the idea that it doesn't belong. The excellent thing is they come in their own little storage box. The puzzle pieces are also marked on the back so they do not get mixed up. So each piece of puzzle from the same picture has like a circle, square or a triangle differentiating it from the other pictures. These are very good to teach small kids problem solving and organizing, great math tool. Although these are wood puzzles the picture itself is paper so should avoid getting wet. Thats really not an issue for us since my kids do not put these in their mouths or use around water.

The lid to the little wooden box can be slid out to do a puzzle on. Then there are dividers in the box to keep the three puzzles separated. They are big pieces so that it is easy for my little one to do it. He loves doing puzzles. They are three different kinds of animal puzzles. So once he completes a puzzle, we point out the different animals and name them all. Just one of the ways to make this more educational and fun. When your done playing with the puzzles, you can put them in their little section of the box and slide the lid back on to keep them in place.
