Quick access to the tools that I use most often

What I like about it: 1. Almost entirely steel and stainless steel, made in USA 2. Well made, solid, everything works smoothly 3. Pliers can be deployed one-handed by a flick of the wrist, or with a thumb-slide 4. Pliers can be retracted one-handed 5. The main knife blade is accessible from the outside. It opens and closes just like a regular lockback knife. 6. The screwdriver also opens and closes from the outside just like the knife. It takes regular screwdriver bits available in hardware stores...flat, Phillips, torx, hex-head, even nutdrivers 7. The triangular wire cutter/stripper blades are replaceable. They have three edges so they can be rotated twice before replacing. I'm probably not the only person who uses my wire cutter for things it wasn't designed for Unnecessary features: 1. I've never wished that my pliers were spring-loaded. That's what your little pinkie is for. 2. Lanyard hole. Who wears a tool on a lanyard? Switching screwdriver bits takes a little extra time because the other bit is located inside the handle. There is only room for one extra bit on-board. There is an optional separate bit set available. I've been a Leatherman fan since getting the original Leatherman as a safety award decades ago. I still carry it in the weathered leather sheath which has been everywhere with me, even underwater a few times. I use pliers, the knife, and the screwdrivers on a multitool most often. They all require multiple steps to deploy and retract on most multitools. I sometimes carry a separate pocket knife because the Leatherman knife blade is cumbersome to get to, and to close. The Gerber Center Drive is a bit larger than my Leatherman, and the fabric case is larger still because it has a compartment for a bit set which isn't included. Getting used to the slightly larger and heavier Gerber may take some time, but I really like the quick, easy access to the pliers, screwdriver and knife. I wish it had scissors. I received this tool from the Walmart Spark reviewer program in exchange for an honest review. I really struggled with giving it five stars because I figured it would have to be better than my old faithful Leatherman to warrant five stars. And it is. I think.

Best Gerber Multi-Tool yet!

The Gerber Center-Drive 14-Tool Multi-Tool Pliers w/ Sheath is the best Gerber Multi-Tool I've owned and I've been using these things for almost 30 years. The construction has come a long way and this tool is light but so strong. There are probably 14 tools in this thing somewhere, but I'm not sure I've found them all. The main ones are pliers, knife, screwdriver (both phillips and standard), saw, file, hole punch, and bottle opener/mini pry bar combo. There's also markings for inches (3) and cm (8) engrained on the inner handle knife side, so maybe they count that as 2 tools? That still leaves me 3 short, but those are the main ones. And the important thing is those are all really useful and well designed. The pliers are strong and have a great grip - probably the best overall use along with the knife blade. The screwdriver is also actually useful and not just gimmicky. There's a magnetic head that's strong enough you won't lose it but easy enough to swap out if you need the standard head which is hidden away in the handle on the screwdriver side. There are smart releases for everything too. A slider for the pliers, a lever you need to push in for the blade to unlock, and a thumb slider you push to release the saw, file, hole punch and bottle opener. The design is interesting in that it feels lightweight, yet has weight in the places that need it. You can feel the quality in every element of this design, and is representative of why Gerber is one of the best names in multi-tools. Made in the USA too! Highly recommended!

It is a great tool to have at hand every day!

When I got the chance to review this Gerber Center-Drive 14-Tool Multi-Tool Pliers w/ sheath.. I was thrilled. My mother had gifted me a slightly smaller version 40 yrs ago, when I graduated from High School. I used it almost daily for over 20 yrs... until the carry case finally wore holes in it. I was afraid that I might lose the tool... so I put that one in a drawer so I wouldn't loose it. Even after 20 yrs of regular use it still looks as new as the day I first took it out of the box. So I already knew how well these Gerber tools are made and wanted another one. This modern version is much better than my older model. I don't know where to start. It is sturdier. More heavily built. The tools deploy easily. The wire cutter has replaceable cutters. I have easily cut 12 gauge electrical wire. The needle nose pliers grip firmly.. and don't twist or become unaligned. The screw driver is a nice improvement. It uses exchangeable bits. The tool comes with a Philips & Flat bit. But you have a pouch in the carry case so you can also carry various security bits as well. As a kid you may have dreamed of owning a pocket knife with the corkscrew, knife, fork & spoon. Well, that was a kid's tool. This is a working man's every day carry tool. The pliers can be deployed and retracted with one hand. All the tools lock securely into place and don't have any play in them. I've only had this tool a short time and I am now retired... but I have already gotten good use out of it. It rides comfortably on my belt. The heavy duty case can be carried on your belt either vertically or horizontally. I highly recommend this Gerber multi-tool.
