A heating element converts electrical energy into heat through the process of Joule heating. Electric current through the element encounters resistance, resulting in heating of the element. This process is independent of the direction of current. A shim is a washer or thin strip of material used to align parts, make them fit, or reduce wear. Shims may also be used as spacers to fill gaps between parts subject to wear. On machinery installations (pumps, motors, etc.) the recommended practice requires new shims to be placed under every supporting foot. A washer is a thin plate (typically disk-shaped, but sometimes square) with a hole (typically in the middle) that is normally used to distribute the load of a threaded fastener, such as a bolt or nut.
