Durable, and easy to get the hang of

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have an 8 year old and a 4 year old, and they both loved this Hot Wheels R/C Lightyear Space Mission Explorer Vehicle. To preface, they're both extremely into Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear, so that was definitely a bonus to this product. For the spaceship to function correctly, it must be charged a sufficient amount. Once charged up, the boys took turns making the spaceship do tricks. It is pretty easy to get the hang of and a quick sweep of the directions definitely clarified things for us. We loved that it wasn't made complicated by having different dials and knobs. It's 3 buttons. One takes off, one lands, and one makes it do the tricks. Overall, this product is easy to get the hang of, can withstand quite a bit of crashing (yes, this was tested!), and holds a charge quite well. My kids can't wait to take it on vacation to the beach this year (away from the water of course!) Highly recommended!

Meh...why did they bother?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The vehicle is easy to fly and it can flip mid-air with a push of a button. It also has protected propellers and a anti-impact system on certain parts so it doesn't run into things as often. All those are definitely big improvements when compared to other kids' flying toys that are difficult to fly/keep in the air, run into things and/or break permanently after a few minutes or the first impact. The downside to the design is that there are four propellers and there is nothing to stop it from landing on someone's head and getting caught in their hair, so you have to make sure there's supervision and you have a clear space to fly in, either indoors or outdoors. It does automatically land on its own, but there's no way to stop any pre-programmed maneuvers once they are started, which can be a bit scary if its landing in the wrong place. The controls are better for younger children than recommended; its just three buttons, one of which is for landing. Everything is a pre-programmed maneuver - there is no free-flying mode, so its really a one-trick pony. That said, there's three buttons, one of which is supposed to cycle through several different movements, but its hard to make it work as intended, even for an adult. It also has very little battery life - it made it about 10 minutes flying and then it takes over an hour to recharge with a USB cord. Its definitely not going to last very long - the body is a hard Styrofoam on the bottom with a light plastic on top; we were really careful about where we flew it so it wouldn't land on concrete or tile. It also comes with a miniscule figurine that fits in the cockpit, which was lost almost immediately because the cockpit hatch doesn't stay latched when it just falls out of the air when the battery dies. Its supposed to provide a verbal warning when the battery is almost dead, but it either didn't or was too quiet to hear over the buzzing of the engines. Younger children will find it too loud - it has a very high-pitched buzzing when flying - and even older children and adults will find it annoying, at least indoors. Our six year-old was too scared of the noise to fly it and our eight year-old wasn't really interested in it because she couldn't "drive" it; it was incredibly boring for the ten year-old . It would need to have more options for the 8+ crowd; today's kids are familiar with video games, so much so that a six year-old can handle the 10+ controls on most system controllers, so its perplexing that they didn't include more flying controls on this toy. They enjoyed watching Dad fly it the first time around the living room, and we took it out to a field one day, but its not something they will go look for in the play room.

Really Flies!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids love this remote control spaceship! They follow it around and play with it for as long as the battery lasts. It is easy to use with three simple control buttons and fun tricks. Be sure that you have an area to fly it with some space because there are not any controls to maneuver front/back/left/right and if it gets too far away, it will be out of range. You'll need some room for the child to chase it around. When the spaceship is out of range, it will land which keeps it from flying away too far. The first time out, the rechargeable battery in the spaceship lasted for about 30 minutes of play. The Lightyear figure that goes inside is tiny and will be easy to lose but isn't necessary for the fun of the spaceship.
