George Gently: The Complete Collection (Blu-ray), Acorn, Drama

Martin Shaw is marvelous as Inspector Gently. While the show is not childishly free of "grit," it is also not gratuitously gory or unnecessarily, sexually obnoxious. More recently, I have seen some British shows that are a bit silly, or unnecessarily violent, or even a bit inane. This is a development that disturbs me. However, this series is not one of those shows. I was drawn into the show immediately, and found the psychology of the relationship between the younger and brash detective sergeant, and the older, wiser, and kinder inspector, of great interest. This seems more like the world in which I grew up. Today seems like a free-for-all, so it is nice to escape to a more rational, thoughtful, and less selfish time. Finally, the dialog is not stilted, and the director assumes the viewer has a brain.
