This is the first major and detailed geographical study on Maternal Mortality to come out of Northern Nigeria. The study was based on Kano State, the most populous State in Nigeria and the largest city in the Muslim north. It examines the causes and socio- cultural determinants of maternal mortality in both urban and rural communities in Kano State as well as hospital-based deaths. The study also provides the spatial patterns of hospital deliveries, as well as maternal mortality and morbidity in the State. The book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand the causes of maternal mortality in a developing country.
