It flabbergasts me how people buying sushi from a supermarket think they have the right to compare supermarket sushi to sushi restaurant sushi, sheesh. If it was restaurant quality sushi you'd be buying it from a sushi restaurant and not a supermarket.
That said, let's move on….
I'm not fond of the added sauces provided, I very, very rarely use them for the sushi. Sometimes I use them for other things. Usually they are trashed, to much alteration of sushi flavor.
What I do use is the standard accompaniments, the Wasabi, shaved Ginger, and Soy sauce. The Wasabi provided is high-quality Wasabi, better than most Sushi Restaurants provide. A dollop the size of a safety-pin ball should clear you sinuses well. It's not mixed down with horseradish, like your sushi restaurant does. True Wasabi should only burn for less than five (5) to ten (10) seconds, not twenty or thirty like American horseradish does. The shorter and harsher the burn the more pure the Wasabi. I import Wasabi from Japan for the best quality, this wasabi is similar to what I buy. Test your favorite sushi restaurant wasabi against the wasabi in these Walmart sushi, by having an equal amount before beginning eating without adding it to the food, and see for yourself. I'd wager your favorite sushi restaurant cuts the wasabi with American horseradish.
I mix this wasabi with about a half teaspoon of the soy sauce to distribute it evenly to six pieces, the other two pieces I split the ginger between, and add the remaining soy sauce to all pieces. That's my standard recipe.
And, a ‘Best-By” date means exactly what it says. It is at its best by that date, AND, it is still edible reasonably beyond that date. Having been a Foodbank volunteer for many years we were taught to understand the meanings of these manufacturers datings from actual data, not someone's idea of it, and I've eaten sushi up to seven days beyond the Best-By date without any stomach nor intestinal issues. Other people who I know have gone up to ten (10) days beyond without issues. ‘sTruth. It's fish, it will smell like fish because it is fish. Fresh fish smells like fish. If it's bad it smells rancid and/or different from fish.
The ONLY food to **not go beyond the best by date** is anything that contains TOMATOES. Tomatoes in a canned state go bad quickly beyond their suggested **USE-BY** date and may cause severe digestion issues if consumed when it's bad. ‘Nuff said.
I love this sushi because it's tasty and economical, and, easier to get than restaurant sushi for someone who is not able to get out to have it otherwise, like me. I'm medically disabled and I don't have a power wheelchair.
