Irish-born Le Poer was just sixteen when he ran away from his boarding school in search of adventure. He soon made his way to Paris but finding himself desperately short of money, and unwilling to either return or apply to his family for funds, he took the decision to join the Foreign Legion. This book published in 1904, some twenty years after his time in the Legion, gives an account of his service in Africa and the Far East, the comrades he made and his doomed love affair.
