When we had a new heat and air system installed, the HVAC tech told me not to buy the thick "allergy" filters because it put an unnecessary strain on the unit. He said if you change the air filters every month or two using the thinner, cheaper ones, it was better for my system and costs less in the long run as the allergy, thick filter are way more expensive.
