Ensure Your Transmission Swap Success with Our Kickdown Cable Kit The transmission kickdown is a critical part of your transmission’s operation. The cable assembly (and on some older vehicles an actual medal rod/linkage) connects to the engine’s carburetor or throttle body EFI system and provides a downshift, or “kickdown” to what many refer to as a “passing gear.” This performs a downshift to the transmission automatically when the accelerator pedal is depressed to wide open throttle (WOT), placing the engine’s output in the peak power and torque range for maximum acceleration to pass a vehicle. This is all accomplished without the driver having to touch the shift lever in the car, possibly downshifting too far (all the way to first gear) or potentially moving the shift lever to neutral or reverse, causing catastrophic damage. When swapping a different transmission behind your project’s engine you will often find the factory kickdown linkage or passing gear cable will not interface with your new transmission, or the factory transmission kickdown linkage that came with your donor transmission will not fit your vehicle (exhaust or crossmember interference, etc.). Of course, most reman transmissions and performance transmissions do not come with shift levers and kickdown setups of any sort, relying on the installer to figure everything out. In any of these cases, a universal cable-type kickdown assembly is your best bet to obtain a functional transmission kickdown cable adjustment for your engine and transmission combo. These kick down cable kits feature a cut-to-fit outer sheath and cable (can be cut with hacksaw or fine cutoff wheel), providing the perfect length, and routing no matter the engine/transmission combination and engine bay obstacles. They are available in either braided stainless steel or black polyethylene covered outer finishes with matching aluminum fittings. The PTFE inner lining provides smooth cable actuation in any environment and through multiple bends making routing a breeze.
