The cable assembly (and on some older vehicles an actual medal rod/linkage) connects to the engine’s carburetor or throttle body EFI system and provides a downshift, or “kickdown” to what many refer to as a “passing gear.” This performs a downshift to the transmission automatically when the accelerator pedal is depressed to wide open throttle (WOT), placing the engine’s output in the peak power and torque range for maximum acceleration to pass a vehicle. This is all accomplished without the driver having to touch the shift lever in the car, possibly downshifting too far (all the way to first gear) or potentially moving the shift lever to neutral or reverse, causing catastrophic damage. When swapping a different transmission behind your project’s engine you will often find the factory kickdown linkage or passing gear cable will not interface with your new transmission, or the factory transmission kickdown linkage that came with your donor transmission will not fit your vehicle’s Tuned Port Injection throttle body.
