Grand Rapids lettuce is a loose-leaf, or leaf type, lettuce that develops crisp leaves loosely set on the plant's stalk. Lettuce prefers cool weather where temperatures remain in a range from 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit from seed to harvest, which typically requires more than 50 days. In some parts of the country, this is nearly impossible to provide in an outside garden setting. Growing lettuce in containers indoors allows you to control the growing environment.
