Its a candle.....how can I be using it wrong?

I bought two of these bucket citronella candles and they have been a frustration to try and use. The 'wax' material melts in direct sunlight, covering wick and making it a task to melt the wax around the wick just to get it to light. By the time I've got it lit, I've been attacked by mosquitoes.

I bought this hoping to ward off masquitos. It has no affect at all !! The candel is set in the middle if my patio table, no wind, under a gazebo. And still the masquitos are buzzing around me.
