We Popeye cartoon fans have been waiting a long time for this. But finally, the first official release of the wonderful black-and-white vintage Popeye shorts from the Max Fleischer Studios. Many people are perhaps more familiar with the more "recent" color Popeye cartoons from the 50s and 60s, which are pretty good. However, these classic original cartoons are something special. Max Fleischer & Company took much care in their attention to detail, and the result was some awesome animation. If you've never experienced these original shorts, you are in for a special treat, especially since the first 60 cartoons included here have all been restored from the original negatives. YOUR eyes will POP! And what wonderful muttering by The Sailor Man in those early years, especially after Jack Mercer took over providing his voice in 1935. The original deep-voiced Bluto (Gus Wickie until '36) was wonderful also. Included in this 4-disc set are the first two 3-color specials: Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves. If that wasn't enough, over 5 hours of bonus materials are contained in this 1st Volume of Popeye cartoons: retrospectives on Popeye and Max Fleischer, bonus shorts, audio commentaries, and more. You will surely not be disappointed in this fantastic long-awaited release. Highly recommended!!!
