Salpiglossis sinuata, or commonly referred to as Painted Tongue, is a colorful and showy annual that prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. This variety, Velvet Dolly, produces bushy plants that reach about 16 inches in height. Covering the bush are blooms that are trumpet-shaped, velvety, and can come in different colors. It’s highly unusual and lovely too! The blooms often have darker colored veins, painted throats, and a marbled look. The plant withstands high summer temperatures, so it’s a good choice for areas of consistently high heat. In spring, start the seed indoors 4 – 6 weeks before the end of frost season, or directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press the seed into the soil, do not cover it, and keep it moist. Given temperatures of 70 – 75F, germination is usually within 15 days. Space the plants 9 - 12 inches apart.
