Smell disappears in a few days. I use cotton matress protector on top of it to keep it clean. My underlying matress is firm, and I wanted to see softness. The sensation is that you sink in. and I agree with other reviews that it's difficult to turn on this topper. I sleep better and have less back pain. Very relaxing. My topper is 4 inch thick.it replicates the feel of sleeping in a featherbed if you ever slept on one of those. You have, if you're a child of 40th-70th of the previous century, lol. I was pleasantly surprised by this memory foam matress topper, it's like going back to childhood. 2 thumbs up, buy it. I used it for about a month now, too early to evaluate durability. Buy a thinner pad, like 2 mm, if you don't want to sink in but want a little cushioning. I wanted to sink all the way in, hey I'm happy.
