Musical Double Feature: The Wiz / The Wiz Live!

I bought this because my family fell in love with The Wiz Live. The Wiz Live is absolutely perfect — beautiful, happy, tightly-paced, with a cast that has a ridiculous level of talent. It has a new song in it that was written by the cast, and the song is great. I mean, the live version is just flawless. So I bought the set, and I thought, hey, we can watch the older movie too! I had never seen that one before. It turns out my mom never showed me the 70's version of the Wiz when I was a kid because she thought it was too scary, and based on how my kid reacted to it, I think my mom was right. The older movie is dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and a bit disturbing. It's not a bad movie — it is visually striking, and well sung. It's a work of art. But it is a disturbing work of art that I don't enjoy viewing. I swear, when the munchkins pop out of the walls in the dark and start chanting, it reminds me of the movie Us. This set is worth buying in order to have a copy of The Wiz Live, which is exceptional. It's a real shame if that version is less watched or less remembered than its predecessor. The two are so different, they're almost like two completely separate musicals that use the same songs.

Not only did I benefit from the low, low price for this treasured DVD, but it also arrived a day earlier than I anticipated. I love shopping at Walmart, whether instore or online.
