According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock as a symbol to explain the Holy Trinity to nonbelievers as he sought Irish converts to Christianity in the fourth century. By the time of Saint Patrick’s death - presumed to have happened on March 17 - the legend had spread. The shamrock assumed a role in religious celebrations of the saint’s feast day during the 17th century. Even the poor wanted to dress up for church, and as luck would have it, an appropriate adornment was growing on the ground outside their homes. The round's reverse features a Celtic cross and the words "Ireland Forever" at the bottom and the words "Éire Go Brách" at the top, a phrase used to express allegiance to Ireland. It is most often translated as "Ireland Forever."
