Defective

Apparently I received a defective unit. At first it failed to boot - the keyboard lights indicated it was powered on, but nothing happened. After trying to start the laptop for about 30 minutes, it eventually booted into Windows. From this point, things appeared to work correctly for about a day. Then I started having more problems where the laptop would freeze after about 1-2 minutes after booting. Even if I booted into the BIOS, it would still freeze there. After freezing, a hard shutdown was required. Then the laptop would require a rest time of about 15 minutes where it would not boot up again and only the keyboard lights would power on. I'm not sure if the battery reset switch had any effect. Another issue is that this laptop does not work with Linux, at least not without some tinkering. This is actually a major issue for me, as I do all my work in Linux. There are some discussions on the internet suggesting workarounds, but there didn't seem to be any definitive steps that worked for everyone. I decided to return the laptop rather than sending it for repair or attempting to get an exchange. Having hardware problems with a new laptop directly out of the box didn't give me much confidence to stick with it. It's a shame, because this seemed to be the ideal laptop for me: portable like a chromebook, but memory, CPU, and storage of a higher-end laptop. Thankfully, Walmart accepted the return without hassle. I have another Acer laptop - a 15.6" model, which was probably the cheapest one they made at the time. That one has served me well for about 2 years. So I've had good experiences with Acer products too.
