«Cabe la posibilidad de que algunos lectores de hoy se animen a leer el Quijote en la compañía de aquel semijoven de treinta y tres años, de manera parecida a como lo hicieron aquellas alumnas de Wellesley.
»Estas notas lo recorren casi capítulo a capítulo, aunque en algunos momentos me extendí mucho, y llegué a escribir #minitextos# articulados, y en otros poco o nada. Lo que se ve a las claras es cuáles fueron mis intereses en aquella lectura, y cuáles son mis motivos para considerar esa novela la más rica y compleja que jamás se haya escrito. Wellesley's Quixote is a previously unpublished, masterful look by Javier Marías at the most important work ever written in Spanish.
"It is possible that some of today's readers are motivated to read Don Quixote in the company of that 33-year-old young man, similarly to the way those students at Wellesley did.
"These notes cover the book almost chapter by chapter, although in some moments I elaborated more, and ended up writing articulated ‘minitexts', and in other instances little or nothing. What you can clearly see are my interests in that reading, and my motives for considering that novel the richest and most complex work ever written. I'm afraid that those motives of mine don't coincide too much with those of the majority of my novelist colleagues, both past and current. If anything proves the validity of the Quixote, it's the infinite number of readings that can be done of it, frequently opposing or contradictory. This is mine, which hasn't varied substantially since 1984."
