Cutting the prongs to the correct length helps when it is time to replace the pin. However, the prongs must be long enough to prevent the pin from slipping back out through the bolt. If the cotter pin has a curve on one side rather than two straight prongs, ensure that the bolt rests firmly between the "v" on the cotter pin.

Quality Assortment
Someone actually made an assortment that gives you the sizes you need. This assortment contains most sizes needed for various size clevis pins. Many clevis pins are sold with very low quality cotter pins. The cotter pins in this assortment are definitely higher quality. I also like the fact that they are longer. It easier to make a long pin short than it is to make a short pin long.
