Proceedings of the first conference to focus on the cultivation of the Irish language in urban areas, which was held in the UCDHumanities Institute, 23-4 May 2013. Mahon, Vincent Morley and Lesa N Mhunghaile). Proinsias Drisceoil draws on Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework to evaluate Irish/English interaction in Callan, Co. Kilkenny, while Neil Buttimer and Fionnt n de Br n analyze the impact of Irish in the public spheres of Cork and Belfast. Breand n Madag in and Nollaig Mura le trace the fortunes of Irish west of the Shannon, in Limerick, Galway and Sligo. Liam Mac Math na and Regina U Chollat in, organizers of the conferences and editors of the volume, contribute an introductory essay which situates the conference's theme within L ann na Gaeilge, or Irish language studies, in general.
