This study looks at the events surrounding Anastasio Somoza Garda's rise to power. It seeks to understand the dynamics operating in Nicaraguan society that made this event possible. It focuses on how Anastasio Somoza Garda used the United States to accomplish his goals and secure his power rather than how the United States used Somoza. The study also examines the behavior of the political elite of the period which included, but is not limited to, the use of family ties, political patronage, nepotism and the use of the state as a personal entitlement.
