Au moment ou l'on celebre le douzieme centenaire de la mort du premier souverain europeen (814), ce texte fondateur doit etre remis a la disposition des lecteurs.La precedente edition et traduction, donnee par Louis Halphen en 1923, inaugura la collection Les Classiques de l'histoire de France au Moyen Age devenue Les Classiques de l'histoire du Moyen Age dans laquelle ce volume prend place, un siecle apres. Il a ete prepare sur la base du texte latin etabli par Halphen par une equipe de jeunes chercheurs sous la direction de Michel Sot (historien) et Christiane Veyrard-Cosme (latiniste). Ensemble, ils proposent une traduction francaise entierement nouvelle, precedee d'une introduction et accompagnee de notes substantielles reposant sur les derniers acquis de la recherche. Cet ouvrage propose une double approche de formule inedite, associant demarche historique et analyse litteraire.Riche d'anecdotes piquantes, de descriptions ethnographiques, de notations epiques, ce texte est la source essentielle pour l'histoire de Charlemagne et l'interpretation de son regne. On y voit la depreciation des Merovingiens en rois faineants, et la construction de l'image du grand conquerant, renovateur de l'Eglise, de l'ecole et de la culture, couronne empereur par le pape en 800. Mais ce recit est aussi l'oeuvre d'un auteur: Eginhard ecrit apres les faits et son ouvrage est tisse des preoccupations politiques des successeurs de Charlemagne. C'est aussi l'oeuvre d'un savant, acteur de la Renaissance carolingienne, petri de culture classique mise au service de la politique et de l'art litteraire.
