In writing that portion which treats of the Criminal Law, it has been the aim of the authors to exhaust the subject. The cases have been stated so fully as to preclude the necessity of examining the volumes of Reports from which they are taken. This has been done not only for the benefit Of the non-professional reader, but for the reason that many of the cases cited are taken from English Reports, which are not generally accessible, even to the legal Profession, in this country. Free use has been made of the fifth edition of russell on Crimes, London, 1865. This edition, edited by Mr. Greaves, for accuracy and completeness is not surpassed by any text-book in the law.

The practitioner in the criminal courts, whether engaged in the prosecution or defence, will find Precedents of Indict ments, - many of which have been drawn expressly for this work, and the evidence necessary to support them.
