When Mary was 90 her friends gave her a surprise birthday party, the success of the event was obvious, as on leaving she thanked us all profusely and asked for another to celebrate her 100th! As her friend drove a smiling Mary away, in a car full of the balloons we had used to decorate the venue, we were all determined that the next celebration would be even bigger and better. This book has been compiled as a record of that memorial event. In response to our appeal for memories of Mary, many people came forward and we had a wonderful afternoon hearing each other's recollections and launching the Mary Brancker Bursary. Included are a short biography and a timeline of Mary's life, to put into context her friends and colleagues recollections, but we have not considered her research and academic work, as that is well documented elsewhere. Containing many of our memories, hopefully this small volume will give a flavour of what a pioneering, conscientious, hardworking, kind, and indeed unique person Mary Brancker was.
