Wonderful Book!

I had a hard time putting this book down. It's a story about Frank McCourt and his family first living in the U.S. and then moving to Ireland and all the hardships they had to endure as a family.

Sorry, but it went from interesting to terrible.

After about 100 pages I got the picture. The poverty and misery were gut wrenching, especially the despicable dad who thought he had high virtues, but who disregarded his family and caused them great suffering by drinking away the little money that they had, and that they needed to survive on. But it just kept going on and on. Same kind of sad anecdotes. Wash, rinse, repeat. In detail, and repetitive to the point of replacing the sympathy with indifference. I didn't need to be told 15 times about how the dad blew the money in the pub. Had to slog through the rest of the book. It was like watching a 12 hour drivers ed scare film, when the point is made after the first half hour. Then he talks over and over about his masturbation - that is not a joke, he really dwelt on it.
