Gymax Set of 2 Drawer Nightstand Bedside Table Compact Sofa End Table Rustic Walnut

First, I bought this set because it said it was made of wood, the implication was real wood. It's really made of laminated chipboard, I think they call it MDF. It's a dark walnut brown so the raw edges really stand out. The directions are just pictures, some of them take a bit of guesswork but I eventually got it sorted out. Two main things were the face plate in the bottom front had the holes drilled in reverse so the only way the cover could be mounted was upside down with the covered beveled edge towards the floor and the raw edge showing under the fronts of the drawers. Some of the holes were for screws, others for wider pegs that had a circular locking nut that keeps them in place. The same locking nut was used on the screws in a few places, it would have made more sense to have them all be the screw holes because the pegs tended to slip too far into the hole on the matching piece. The drawer bottoms slid into grooves on the side and front walls of the drawers but the bottoms themselves are on the thin side. The cover for the back was very thin and could have been about a half inch wider and an inch longer for better coverage. The whole unit is heavy, the shipping weight was 38 lbs, but the laminate on the outside is not waterproof, so any spills must be wiped up immediately. Assembly time, working by myself, was between 3-4 hours for one unit, mostly because some of the line drawings weren't totally clear. They did highlight the roller mounts for the drawers, and show which way to mount them. I really wanted to give them a higher rating but there's no half points. The hardware issues, the laminate finish on the whole thing and and the misdrilled holes that took away from the finished look in front were what pulled this rating down. I still have to assemble the matching unit - bought as a set - so I am thinking that's going to be another afternoon spent. My small cordless drill helped a lot until the battery quit, most of the holes are predrilled but you still have to put some effort into the last couple turns. My bed sits high because of the base it is on so I set the side table on 2 inch risers and its at the perfect height. Overall, for the price, it was about average for the styles offered at the time. What I was looking for was a pair of bedside tables with drawers to contain those loose incidentals that roll off a flat top table, I just wish it was real wood instead of MDF but it seems that is what most manufacturers are using now.
