This year, for the first time in 221 years, there will be a double cicada emergence. Known as Brood XIII and Brood XIX, the 13-year and 17-year groups will emerge from late Spring through early Summer. Over the next 14 years, excluding 2026, there will be a significant cicada emergence every year from 2024-2038. Cicadas damage plants, shrubs, and trees by laying eggs in small slits and cracks in the protective bark of branches. This becomes a weak point in the plant and can break off with wind and rain events. This damage is called flagging. In order to protect your ornamental and fruit plants, Dalen has a series of products designed to limit or eliminate cicada damage. Brood XIII cicadas will appear in the Midwest in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, and Missouri. Brood XIX will appear over a larger area including Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky.
