Smith's visit, a regular traffic was opened with the Indians; blankets, hatchets, ket tles and trinkets being bartered for fish, fowls, berries, baskets, poultry and furs. Thousands of English, French, Spanish, Flemish and Portuguese fishermen cruised annually on the banks of Newfoundland and on the fishing-grounds of Cape Cod, while as yet no settlement existed, save in the visionary's dream.
