He initially studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts, a skill he never exercised. He is best known for his travel and cinema poster, book illustrations and typography. In 1937 he was awarded the Gold Medal for poster design at the Paris International Exhibition (Exposition internationale de Paris), he also twice received the National Poster Award (Prix National de l'Affiche, 1976 and 1979) as well as the Prix Maximilien Vox (1984).
