This print will look wonderful framed in the home, office or restaurant and is perfect for the Vintage Art Collector. - ABOUT THE ARTIST - Lindgren Brothers - In 1932 the Lindgren Brothers of Spokane, WA. began manufacturing colorful silk-screened maps depicting iconic national parks and other scenic areas. With emphasis on both verbal and visual humor, they titled these inexpensive tourist souvenirs 'Hysterical Maps,' seeking to distinguish them from 'historical' pictorial maps, a genre then in vogue. This one, from 1937, captures the Grand Coulee area while the dam was still under construction. Although obviously hysterically funny, the brothers Jolly & Ott do a good job of illustrating how the massive dam project would divert Columbia River water into a large, dry 'coulee' for the purpose of storing that water for a massive irrigation project which would, by the 1950's, turn the baron desert of Eastern WA into a green Pasture Of Plenty. The projected result of this land reclamation was dubbed 'The Planned Promised Land', a bold bit of rhetoric to promote the project as a solution to the Dust Bowl crisis and migrant issue during the 1930's. Woody would write 26 songs about the Columbia River projects and saw the ambitious government initiative as Social Democracy in action. It was quite a time!
