He was allegedly the first to coin the phrase, 'Polish School of Poster' to describe the group of artists in post-war Poland striving to combine an appreciation of painting and illustration with the simplicity of graphic design. Lenica originally studied music and architecture before beginning a career in illustration drawing cartoons for satirical magazines. He began designing movie posters in the early 1950s and won the state award for lithography while he was still in his twenties. He designed over 150 posters which, along with his innovative animated films, have been exhibited and won awards around the world. His style was often characterised by an abstract simplicity that used colour and satirical aphor in an almost childlike approach. A distorted human figure or head was a recurrent motif.
