Really high quality in the cheap violin category

This is my 3rd cheap violin I've bought, 1st from this brand. I didn't expect much in this category of cheap violins (commonly called VSO for violin shaped objects), but this one is actually really great: It was playable out of the box (I did not have to sand down the neck, pegs, bridge, frog of the bow, and find the fingerboard attached badly like the Glarry I bought previously). The varnish was not a virulent orange red like most cheap violins. The back panel was even subtly flamed!, which I'd not seen on the other 2 I bought, nor even on the 2 other larger cheapo violins from my own childhood. The strings that came with it are really low tension, and it goes out of tune pretty easily even after settling for a couple weeks, but it is easy for a kid to press the strings down when they haven't built up the strength yet - the sound quality would be easily much improved if I just switched out the strings for some cheaper end addario strings. A little peg compound would also likely help with the minor peg slippage, which would probably bring it into the happy medium of being snug but not so much that it's impossible to turn (important here is that the pegs are well shaped to begin with). The horsehairs on the bow was attached decently well and haven't been falling out much at all (if unevenly attached like the other violins I got, the hairs will fall out easily and won't tighten properly). The rosin that came was also fine - not old or cracked, and after scoring it a little and putting some elbow grease to rosining the bow for a few minutes, the bow was perfectly useable (if you don't rosin the bow properly and enough when you get a new bow, it doesn't make a sound - it needs that friction). The shoulder rest is a little flimsy, but usable and fits inside the case under the scroll/neck without needing to be folded up (put it upside down at an angle), which is key so that it doesn't need to be readjusted every time you want to use it. I paired the shoulder rest with a cheap chinrest cushion for extra comfort. Even the case is great - it opens up just enough so it doesn't keep falling back nor closes while trying to get the violin out, which has been a problem for others I've bought. I have not tried the electronic tuner, so I don't know how well that works. I didn't try the sticker for the finger placement - it looks like it'd be pretty confusing for a beginner, so I did the traditional thing of cutting thin pieces of colored tape to mark the fingers needed for beginner songs. I'm not a professional violinist nor violin maker, just a parent who played violin for fun for years who just wants to get cheap violins for the kids who grow like weeds and say they want to play violin but will probably drop it at a whim any day now. I also don't know if I just lucked out with this particular violin, as I've only gotten the one from this company, but if my kid actually sticks with this, I'll actually be a repeat customer for this brand of cheap violin.

Shocked and impressed!

I am extremely impressed with this instrument! My six year old wanted to try the violin and while that is great, I didn't want to invest a ton of money on something that may not last long. I figured for $63.99 it was at least worth a shot. I am SHOCKED at the quality. I played violin for about 13 years (a few decades ago) and so I am not new to the string instrument world. The violin itself is very well made- I was expecting cheap plastic- it is not at all. The amount of accessories it came with was phenomenal- the case is very nice- hard sided with storage and backpack straps. The bow is very nice and it came with rosin (for the bow) and extra bridge and extra strings, a tuner and even a chin rest. I remember spending $30 on a chin rest many years ago! This one isn't quite the same quality, but for a starter instrument it is perfect! It was easy to tune but fell out of tune pretty quickly- which is to be expected with new strings on an instrument! I noticed another reviewer comment on it going out of tune. This happens for a few reasons- 1. the string stretch, especially when they're new, and 2. wood and strings are super temp sensitive. When I brought this in from the Minnesota fall I new it wouldn't stay in tune for very long. Easy enough to fix- good to get some practice in tuning it again, and it even came with the tuner! I'm thoroughly impressed and very excited- absolutely awesome that such a cool skill/talent/etc. can be made available at a really reasonable price!
