From 1889 to 1894 he served an apprenticeship as an ornamental painter and attended courses at the “Gewerbeschule' in Basel. He went to Paris in 1894 and studied in Munich until 1900. There, he had a studio for decorative art. He returned to Basel and worked as a teacher for lithography and glass painting at the “Gewerbeschule' from 1915 to 1918. Mangold designed posters from 1896 onwards and obtained various awards for his works. In 1905 he gained the attention of lithographer J.E. Wolfensberger. His company Graphische Anstalt J.E. Wolfensberger, which still exists today, was counted among the best lithographic printing companies in Europe. There, most of the exceptional, Jugendstil-influenced art posters by Emil Cardinaux, Otto Baumberger, Otto Morach, Augusto Giacometti and Burkhard Mangold were professionally printed.
