Hook too small for yarn

The hook provided is too small for the type of yarn - consequently the yarn splits easily and it is impossible to do a simple chain stitch without the yarn splitting apart. I've done other crochet projects so I know what I'm talking about. In addition, the YouTube videos the kit directs the customer to are not project-specific - the videos give an overview of the stitch types but there are no specific walk-through videos for each coaster. I am using the yarn for a weave instead. I would not recommend this for beginners. It's a pity because the yarn colors and other components are great. I will probably buy a separate larger hook to salvage this.
