Few top shoe designers take an approach to their work as hands-on as Franco Sarto. Born in 1949 outside of Venice, Italy, he apprenticed at a cobbler's bench at the age of 14. By his twenties, he was selling the prototypes for his own hand-sketched shoe designs. Decades later and at the peak of success in his chosen profession, Sarto still sketches many of the original designs for the women's shoes on which his brand name appears. Only in this way, he believes, can he fully incorporate into his footwear fashions an understanding of the harmony that must always exist between style and comfort in women's shoes. ps6032255
