COMPARING OTTERS TO OTHER ANIMALS

I like being an otter, but today Ive decided to be , the river otter questions an animals characteristics in Linda Staneks childrens book, River Otters Adventure. ~ What ~ This oversized thirty-two-unnumbered-page paperback targets children ages seven to ten years old who enjoy an informative story about comparing otters to other animals. With no scary scenes except for an attacking tiger, it may be best read out loud to beginner readers due to some complicated wording. Expressive, colorful illustrations grace both sides of the pages. In this short tale, a young river otter visits the zoo and decides she would like to be a different creature. She has fun acting out the characteristics of an elephant, pink naked mole rat, musk ox, salamander, gorilla, snake, and tiger, realizing later that she prefers to play, slip, splash, and dive being an otter. The last four pages have more educational tools of learning activities for creative minds that involve information about basic needs and living and nonliving things, the differences between the North American river and sea otter, and river otter adaptions. ~ Why ~ I like that this book shows the differences between animals, whether they be large or small. Each animal described has four features with the otter acting the actions out while the opposite page shows the animal. The drawings are detailed and eye-catching. ~ Why Not Those who do not like an educational read about river otters may show no interest in this book. Beginner readers may have issues with some of the two- and three-syllable words. Others may wish there were more puzzles or games included. ~ Wish ~ I found the story more rudimentary for preschool age with the four descriptions and little detailed information. I wish more books like this were available that had a story yet provided knowledge that a young child could learn in an engaging way. ~ Want ~ If you are looking for a book about otters for elementary-aged children, this will delight many as they realize how different they are than other animals, but younger kids may like it more. Thanks to Arbordale Publishing, Bookpleasures, and the author for this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.
