The biOrb filtration system ensures clear, healthy water through biological, mechanical, and chemical filtration. The key biological aspect of the filtration system is the Pearl Media, which surrounds the filter cartridge at the bottom of the aquarium. This media's structure becomes populated with beneficial bacteria that neutralize ammonia and nitrates from the fish. biOrb Pearl Media has a porous surface that provides a habitat for bacteria. You can increase the filtration area by adding more media to your biOrb. The smooth surface and circular shape of the Pearl Media make it ideal for aquariums with bottom-feeding inhabitants. Made of quartz and flux, this media does not alter the water's pH value. Each pearl has a diameter of 10-12mm. While routine maintenance does not require removing the media, replacing some of it every year or so helps maintain efficient filtration. Only replace one third of the media at a time and wait at least a month before replacing more. This media is suitable for all biOrb aquariums. The number of 2.2 lb. bags needed to fill an aquarium depends on its size.
