Solid Netbook and a better tablet

This netbook remains loyal to its core mission of being a lightweight, ultra-portable device that is optimized for the commuter or mobile professional, while offering the ergonomics and ease-of-use usually exclusive to tablets. It truly is a 2-in-1 device, which makes this Netbook a steal at his price-point. The touch screen is responsive and precise, picking up on the tool tip icons I intended to touch despite them being fairly close together on the compact 11" screen. It is fully capable of being integrated into a work station with it's ports for an HDMI cord, an SD card, 3 USB devices at 3.0 speed, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The screen is bright with solid contrast, failing to betray this Netbook's opening price point. If you must, the speakers are also of serviceable quality and do not sound like there is wax stuck in the speakers. Be aware that due to the 4GB of memory on this device and it's use of a contemporary operating system (Windows 10), it will run like a hog until it has had enough time to properly go through and update. It will feel sluggish out of the box but this will disappear once the computer is properly configured and memory and processing power is no longer being dedicated to updating various background processes. I particularly enjoy using this device as a tablet to stream video. It feels solid in my hands the (almost) 360 degree hinges allow me to position the screen at whatever angle I wish. The hinges for this device are particularly solid and have no lateral give whatsoever. I was able to hold this laptop on its side by the corner of the screen alone and I never felt that the device was in any danger of giving or breaking. All in all, this is a solid, excellently-priced Netbook with no extra frills with the exception of it having thoughtful and commuter-oriented tablet functionality. I am writing this review as part of a contest.

Extra compute core big for pros, still a netbook.

As a tech, I've been dreaming about a "netbook" sized device that was finally fast enough to do real work in all fields of computing. I've used everything from the early single-core Atom netbooks about 10 years ago, to the current crop of Chromebooks and 2-in1s. This is the first one that has reached the "good enough" point for general professional use. The previous AMD APUs in the Stoney Bridge generation that were small enough to appear in passively-cooled devices had E-series CPUs with 2+2 core configuration. This uses an A9 9420 that is limited down from 15W to 6W. The processor is reduced to about on par with a dual-core Celeron, but the extra 64 shaders make a big difference in any professional applications that can use them for computing. It puts this system far beyond the capabilities of its Intel competitors for direct computing on the go. It takes something like an Apple Macbook at around $1000 to get better compute performance in an 11" form factor. For general consumer use, I would only say it's slightly better than previous Celeron and Pentium powered versions of the same thing. CPU power is about the same, slightly less in single-threaded apps. The improved graphics let you play games from 6-7 years ago, rather than 10, but a cheap 15" laptop in the same price range will still do a better job. The low power and fanless cooling prevent this laptop from doing things that AMD APUs in larger laptops do with similar specs can pull off. Everything besides the APU is the same as previous models of the Inspiron 11 2-in-1 released for the past 2 years. It has the same 1366x768 TN touchscreen that is just good enough for the price. It weighs about the same and features the same keyboard, webcam and port selection. Important note if you are unfamiliar with Windows devices running on limited RAM: Any system with 4GB RAM and a slow 5400rpm hard drive is going to take 24-48 hours to be remotely usable. Windows updates and background processes will be fighting with the APU for memory and systems with integrated graphics share even more. At first this system was very slow with the stock RAM and HDD, then about 24 hours after first boot, it had a sudden speed-up and was perfectly usable for Chrome browsing, office applications and general computing without any significant slowdown.
