Doctor prescribed this because I need it to help keep my ph balance due to poor kidney function. I have been taking this for years and it works great. It is a "base" therefore it neutralizes the acid in your stomach and system getting rid of the acid "burn". You can also take it for occasional heartburn. I have never experienced any side effects that prescription and OTC acid reducers will give you.
