Southpaw (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

"Southpaw" is one of the summer's best soundtracks. I'd put it right up there with "Rocky" in terms of great fight movie scores. One if the things that makes this score great is that it compliments the movie perfectly, but is not the type of music I would have imagined would accompany a film like this. The film has a great story, is full of powerful performances and is very competently directed -- so there's no need for the composer to over-do it in terms of the music. Horner does what he does best - composes a great score with interesting melodies. There are not many composers and filmmakers left who are comfortable using the piano as it is used here. This is not a "busy" score by any means; but its simplicity and subtlety is its beauty. The legacy that James Horner leaves behind is an incredible one; a career full of memorable music and diverse sounds. His work on "Southpaw" is a worthy entry into his impressive filmography.
