Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa (1864 - 1901) was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman and illustrator whose immersion in the colorful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 1800s yielded a collection of exciting, elegant, and provocative images of the modern and sometimes decadent culture. He is among the most well-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period. Although Toulouse-Lautrec's skilled depiction of people is highly linear and gives great emphasis to contour, the evolution of his style integrates techniques often associated with Impressionism and Fauvist works. Drawn to the bohemian lifestyle in Montmartre Paris, Toulouse-Lautrec lived and worked amongst other artists whose goal was to translate the decadence of Parisian life to the canvas. He was commissioned to paint promotional posters for the infamous Moulin Rouge, which are still enduring symbols of a bygone era. Toulouse-Lautrec's life was cut short and although his artistic career spanned less than twenty years, his contribution to the art world is immeasurable.
