He just sits around all day. One evening a comet passes by and he catches a ride down to Earth. The President believes that it is an "attack from outer space." He sounds the alarm, fearing the invasion will put his domination of Earth in jeopardy, but all his army finds are the Moon Man's silvery footprints. While exploring, the Moon Man finds many fantastical things, from a doctor who rides a yo-yo and lives in an Escher-esque house to Italians who sell gelato to octopi. Unfortunately, the world is not well because the Moon Man's absence from his post means that all the children are unable to sleep. The film is a race to find the whereabouts of the wandering Moon Man and get him back where he belongs. With a style that leans toward a family-friendly expressionism, this colorful and creative feature feels like the audience is given invitation to play inside the mind of a child. Cleverly expanding on the children's picture book of the same name by Tomi Ungerer (who is profiled in another SIFF doc: Far Out Isn't Far Enough), Moon Man is a fuzzy, warm blanket the whole family can share. ...Moon Man ( Der Mondmann )
