Normally, the electric sump pump will pump water from any pit at least 14 inches in diameter and 24 inches deep. If the electricity goes out, the battery-operated backup pump automatically starts up when the pit fills with water. The efficient 1/4 horsepower motor pumps up to 2,700 gallons per hour or 1,700 gallons per hour at a standard 10 feet of lift.
