Didn’t last long: slit bottom of valve stem

Ugh. I biked 7 miles on a paved trail and my back tire went flat. I thought maybe i went over a sticker. Upon inspection it wasnt a sticker but rather the issue was the valve stem. It was slit at the bottom of the stem. Is this a defect or am i not installing the innertube correctly? This has happened to me before (different brand). I wonder if this is just common on presta valves? I never had this issue on the good ole shrader valve. I’m ready to go tubeless
