After some research, I purchased this lens specifically for the USM feature (besides the the 300mm zoom). I use it to photograph wildlife, mostly birds, in the Puget Sound area and I really like to catch the action. This lens does it. Granted, not all my pictures come out in focus but most of the time - WOW!.
I've caught Bald Eagles, Ospreys and Great Blue Herons catching their fish and in flight, I've caught Green Wing Teals fighting, Redwing Blackbirds attacking Great Blue Herons, Red Tail Hawks hunting, even the most elusive Wilsons Warbler, Bushtits and Kingfisher...and the list goes on.
This lens (no IS) coupled with my T3i (and no tripod) have given me spectacular images that would be worthy of any photography magazine (there have also been many mediocre/ useless images as well, but that's the photographer's fault, not the lens').
All in all, this lens is worth every penny; just know your camera's abilities and drawbacks.
