This part seals the place where the top of the disposer attaches to the bottom of the sink drain (hence the term "gasket") and also serves the function of blocking food particles from flying out of the disposer when it's running. I was concerned about Internet reviews of third-party after-market replacements that are stiff rubber and make it hard for food to go down the drain and for water to drain properly. This OEM part is a very nice soft rubber exactly like the original and allows food and water easily to go down the drain and not pop out. Installation requires disconnecting the J-trap drain pipe and unhooking the disposer under the sink and then reattaching, but both steps are quite easy for a reasonably handy do-it-yourselfer, especially with the disposer's easy-disconnect locking ring .

Problem with installation was that the disposal had to be completely removed from sink and all plumbing to replace the baffle.Then, of course, you have to deal with all the little leaks when put back together again.Also,aligning the disposal to the undersink holding ring was not easy. The disposal is very old, hopefully newer designs have done away with that. InSinkErator makes a great product. This one is still working great
