Saito FG33-R3 Radial rocks

I am just finishing up the break-in of this sweet radial. Of course, the sound is outstanding, it's a radial after all!. But what amazes me is how smooth the engine is. Even wide open, its a very smooth running engine. With a 16 X 10 APC I am getting around 8000 RPM but I'm being very careful to keep things on the rich side. Still need to finalize adjustments of the low end mixture, it's still too rich on the low end, but its clear this is going to yet another great Saito engine. Don't assume the needle is in the correct position when you receive it. Set it to the factory recommended setting before you start it. As shipped, it is nearly closed and would be disastrous if run that way. Oh, did I mention the sound is outstanding?

Very Happy With These Engines

I bought two of these engines. Ran both of them in on a stand and then for the first few flights on both engines I continued to use the 15 to 1 mix. One of them did come with a faulty spark box but HH took care of it in a quick fashion and returned engine with a new one. Problem solved. Don't let the bad reviews scare ya....this engine starts easy and tunes easy, sounds good and has been 100% reliable in the air. No dead sticks.

Love that radial sound...and look!

Building the Hangar 9 DHC-2 Beaver 30cc and was thrilled to learn that the FG-33R3 would fit within the radial cowl. The overall scale application of a radial in the Beaver was enough for me to justify the premium. Opening the box I was pleased with the design fit & finish of the engine. So much so that I enjoyed it as "desk art" for a long while before moving forward with the installation. Before mounting, I sent my engine out to have it modded to optimize the intake plenum and have it professionally run-in. Happy to say that I received excellent HH support throughout the process. Received my engine back and installed in the DHC-2. Using included 'flexi-tube' exhaust, it rev's smoothly to 8800 RPM using a 18x8 carbon fiber prop. Sound great on the ground and in the air! It runs very efficient, getting about 15 minutes with the stock Hangar 9 fuel tank. Look forward to installing an exhaust ring in the future for even more of that distinctive radial sound! Based on this experience, I'm already shopping for airframes for the new FG-60R3 :)
